Real Madrid 2-1 Man Utd
Manchester United were defeated by Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Macedonia. Romelu Lukaku’s first competitive goal for United wasn’t enough to outlast the goals of Casemiro and Isco.
Real Madrid started the game with Gareth Bale instead of Cristiano Ronaldo. This came as a surprise after the Welshman’s future has been up in the air. This may have affirmed that his future lies in Spain.
In the first half, Real Madrid absolutely dominated the match and Manchester United didn’t reply with anything. The Red Devils were happy to concede possession to the Champions League winners and try to attack on the counter attack.
Casemiro drilled the post on a corner kick and should have given the lead to Madrid then. He then went on to score from a Dani Carvajal cross. He seemed offside but the linesman allowed play to go on and the Galaticos had the lead.
Romelu Lukaku rose higher than Sergio Ramos and put his header right at Keylor Navas. This was United’s best chance and was nothing to get excited about. Manchester United only had 35% of the possession in the first half and were extremely disappointed in how they performed during the first period.
In the second half, Real Madrid continued to dominate when Isco grabbed a second goal after combining with Bale. Madrid looked in total control at this point.
Paul Pogba had a header saved by Navas that fell to the feet of Lukaku but the Belgian striker was able to put it on frame. He was able to counter his miss with a goal after Nemanja Matic’s effort was saved into his path.
Marouane Fellaini’s substitution helped United have a little bit more of an aerial threat and almost tied the game up after Henrikh Mkhitaryan played Rashford through one on one with Navas. Navas saved the young striker’s effort.
Real Madrid came out the victors 2-1 and will look to carry that momentum into the Spanish Super Cup next week. Manchester United will look to regroup and be ready for their first Premier League match at the weekend.
